Teddy Bear Lounging Shrug

Last updated on February 3rd, 2024

It’s time to snuggle up with this soft cocoon style shrug! This shrug is meant for lazy and lounging days. We will use the popular and beautiful waffle stitch to crochet this shrug. It makes a lovely present for the long cold days. It works up fast in a day and is easy to make. The size can be easily adjusted. The border is optional, use the same color or a different color for it.

Inspiration: It all started with me opening my new package of yarn. It was blanket and chenille yarn and I started cuddling it rubbing it against my cheek like we all do… And then I started thinking what if I had a wearable that was so cuddly. I started thinking what is the ultimate level of cuddly??  Hence came up with this cocoon shrug idea! This shrug is meant to be worn while sitting on your couch with your cup of hot chocolate/ tea/ coffee (personally I’m a coffee drinker with an occasional cup of hot chocolate).  On a cold winter day where lazy is the only feeling one has.. its the perfect time to wear this shrug and be covered in warm, loving softness.  I chose a cable stitch pattern particularly the waffle stitch so the shrug will be nice and thick. And who does’nt like waffles?! I did not want to compromise on the feeling of a warm hug at all lol! So anyway while it is bulky to move around in, it could not be more perfect to lounge in. I hope you enjoy making and wearing this as much as me.

Construction:

Cocoon Shrug construction is very easy and beginner friendly. We will just crochet a rectangle and then fold it and sew the sides. Add a border which is optional. Any blanket or chenille or weight 6 yarn can be used to crochet this shrug. A super bulky or super chunky yarn is okay. Feel free to adjust the size of the hook if you want.

Stitch details:

We will use the waffle stitch to make this cocoon cardigan. It consists of post stitches. This is a popular stitch and looks awesome no matter what garment or accessory we crochet. It is one of my favorites. They are completely explained in the YouTube tutorial.

Material

Yarn: Use any blanket yarn or chenille yarn or 6 super bulky yarn.

Suggested yarn: Bernat Blanket, any shade.

Material: 100% polyester. Yardage: 220 yards/ 201 m in 300 g/ 10.5 oz.

Amount: 1290 g needed, (946 yards approx) of MC, less than 1 skein of CC (optional).

Note: For a change in border/ length more yarn may be needed. You can use any yarn suitable for your hook size. I am using a larger hook than recommended for yarn for more drape. Do not use heavy yarn fiber if you plan to move a lot wearing the shrug as it will become cumbersome. I have used a local yarn.

Hook: 10 mm (can be adjusted to match gauge).

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape, stitch markers/ safety pin.

Gauge in pattern

Gauge is not important, follow the pattern in inches if gauge does not match.

In pattern in 4” (10 cm by 10 cm): 7 st and 4 rows.

Notes

  1. The pattern is written in US terminology.
  2. The width of the shrug is where the sleeves fall on the outstretched arms, and the height of the shrug is from the neck till where you want the shrug to end. Adjust the width and height of shrug as required.
  3. The shrug is worked back and forth in rows till we make a rectangle of the desired size.
  4. The rectangle is then folded in half and the sides are seamed together leaving a gap for armholes.
  5. Then work the edging for the centre of the shrug and the armholes if you desire.
  6. Ch 2 counts as dc in main pattern unless otherwise mentioned. Ch 1 does not count as stitch.
  7. The shrug is designed in one size. Adjust size if needed as per alteration notes.
  8. This pattern is in multiples of 3+2.
  9. Stitch count remains same in all rows = (foundation ch) – 2
  10. Adding more rows to border will make the shrug/ sleeves larger.

Special stitches

Front post double crochet/ fpdc

Step 1: Yarn over,

Step 2: Working in front of previous row, insert hook from front to back to front around the double crochet post,

Step 3: Yarn over,

Step 5, 6: (Yarn over and pull through 2 loops) twice. Sk sc behind the fpdc.

Change to CC in slst

Insert hook into 1st sc of round, drop the current yarn, and pick up the new color, yarn over pull through 1st sc and the loop on hook.

This method finishes the stitch in old color and the new stitch will be in the new color.

After changing colors tug on yarns to tighten but don’t distort shape of work.

Finishing

Step 1: Fold

Place the rectangle with the RS facing up (fig above). Fold the rectangle in half. Bring the last row towards the bottom chain (fig below). After folding the WS will face up. Place the sides exactly against one another so that the stitches on both sides match.

Step 2: Add stitch marker

From the top of each side, leave a gap for the armholes and place stitch markers (fig below). Make sure the gap is same on both sides.

Armhole sizes

S, M: 7.5”

L, XL: 8”

2XL and up: 8.5”

Step 3: Sew

With the tail end left behind, sew one side closed from bottom up till stitch marker leaving the armhole gap open. Cut a piece of yarn, about 25” (64 cm). Use it to sew the other side in the same way. Use any stitch to sew sides closed (I have used the whip stitch). Weave in any remaining ends.

Tip: Before weaving in ends and adding a border, wear the shrug and check fit of shrug and armholes, adjust if needed. While weaving in ends go through only one side of shrug.

After sewing open up the shrug and turn it inside out so that RS faces up.

Shrug center border: on RS

Join yarn at the bottom chain opposite any dc of the shrug on RS (see arrow above in black).

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 3, 4: Rep rnd 2.

Optional: Change to CC in last slst. Cut MC after leaving 6”.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Alteration note: Rep round 2 for as many rnds as needed. Then rep rnd 5 as last rnd (optional).

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Armhole border: on RS

Join yarn near armhole seam on RS (see arrow in image above in red).

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc evenly around, slst to 1st sc.

Note: I have made 28 sc in rnd 1, the number may differ depending on gauge and armhole size, st count does not matter but it must be same in both armholes.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 3, 4, 5: Rep rnd 2.

Optional: Change to CC in last slst. Cut MC after leaving 6”.
