Inspiration:

Hey everybody! I love crocheting all kinds of hats but my favorite hat by far is the bucket hat. I wear them more often than other hats also. I was thinking how to add a unique twist to the normal, how to “jazz” up the bucket hat. This is when I decided to go with granny squares. I decided I did not want to use normal granny squares either, which is when I came up with the “polka dot” type squares. I began crocheting and I realized the fit was perfect in the first go! I decided to make one more with different colors just to see how it would look and I realized that any 2 contrasting colors would look awesome!

I hope you enjoy making and wearing this as much as me!

Construction

The construction of this cardigan is very easy and beginner friendly. This beanie hat is made in many pieces that are crocheted together. We will crochet the squares first and then join them, then go on to make the crown and the brim of the hat.

Yarn details

Any medium weight or weight 4 yarn can be used to crochet this bolero jacket. Feel free to adjust the size of the hook to match gauge if you want. I have used an acrylic yarn, the red heart yarn is stiff and helps the hat maintain its shape.

Stitch details:

Very beginner friendly hat. We will use basic stitches like single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. If you are a beginner this will be a fun project with a supportive YouTube tutorial to help every step of the way! Learn how to join the granny squares as well!

Special stitches

Please refer to the YouTube tutorial for step by step demonstration of all the techniques explained below!

Color changing: Change colors just before the final yarn over before completing the stitch. This method finishes the stitch in old color and the new stitch will be in the new color (tug all the yarns lightly to tighten the stitch after changing colors).

Change colors in the at end of rnd in the slst just before the rnd in new color.

Insert hook into 3rd ch of ch 3, drop current yarn, pick up new yarn and catch it on hook, pull it through the stitch and loop on hook.

Sc2tog (single crochet 2 together/ decrease)

Step 1: Insert hook into next stitch,

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up a loop,

Step 3: Insert hook into next stitch,

Step 4: Yarn over and pull up a loop,

Step 5: Yarn over, pull through all three loops on hook.

Dc2tog (double crochet 2 together/ decrease)

Step 1: Yarn over,

Step 2: Insert hook into next stitch,

Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook),

Step 4: Yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops (2 loops remaining on hook),

Step 5: Yarn over,

Step 6: Insert hook into next stitch,

Step 7: Yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook),

Step 8: Yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops (3 loops remaining on hook),

Step 9: Yarn over, pull through last 3 loops.

Dc all together

Step 1: Yarn over,

Step 2: Insert hook into next stitch,

Step 3: Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook),

Step 4: Yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops (2 loops remaining on hook),

Rep step 1- 4 till there are 12 loops on hook.

Sc in front loop

Work sc in only front loop.

Notes

  1. Start with making the granny squares and joining them to make the body of the hat.
  2. Make the crown next and the brim last.
  3. Ch 1 and ch 2 does not count as a stitch. Ch 3 counts as a stitch.
  4. 2 dc in next dc means make 2 dc, both in next dc.
  5. Sc in next 2 sc means make 1 sc in each of the next two sc.

Pattern

Body: Granny squares- make 6.

With CC

Start with magic ring (easy magic ring tutorial linked at end of pattern).

Alteration Note: Instead of magic ring, you can also start with a ch 4, slst in 4th ch from hk to form a ring. Continue with rnd 1.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), 11 dc in ring, slst to 3rd ch of ch 3.  –12 dc

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, *2 dc in next dc; rep from * around, slst to 3rd ch of ch 3.  –24 dc

Change colors to MC. Cut CC leaving a tail to weave in.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * around, slst to 3rd ch of ch 3.  –36 dc

Rnd 4: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2dc) in same st, *hdc in next 2 dc, sc in next 4 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc; rep from * 2 more times, hdc in next 2 dc, sc in next 4 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, slst to 3rd ch of ch 3. -8 st between 2 corner st

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Alteration note: This hat is a size M for most adult women. The fit is just right/ not snug. For a snug fit use a smaller hook.

Make 5 more squares.

Join squares

Join squares using CC.

Figure 1: Join 1st and 2nd square along sides

Step 1: Joining 1st and 2nd square. Place the 2nd square with RS facing towards surface, WS facing up, place the 1st square on top of the 2nd square, with RS facing up and WS facing WS of 2nd square.

Step 2: Attach yarn in the ch- 2 sp of both squares. Ch 1. Sc in ch- 2 sp of both squares.

Step 3: Sc in next dc of both squares.

Step 4: Sc across in all dcs till next ch- 2 sp (sc in both squares together).

Step 5: Sc in ch- 2 sp of both squares at end of sides.

Step 6: Fasten off and weave in ends.

Step 7: Join all squares in the same way to make a long line.

Note:

  • RS of all squares should face up after joining.
  • Sc in the same direction while joining squares so that they appear even.

Step 8: Last make a round joining 1st square to last square with sc on RS. Do not fasten off. Continue with crown.

Crown

Continue on RS with same yarn after joining squares to make a round. Make the crown along the top of circle made by squares.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in dc after ch- 2 sp, sc in next 4 st, sc2tog, sc in next 5 st, *sc2tog (in both the next ch- 2 sps), sc in next 5 st, sc2tog, sc in next 5 st; rep from * till last ch- 2 sp, sc2tog (in the last ch- 2 sp and 1st ch- 2 sp), slst to 1st sc. –72 sc

Change colors to MC.

Note: Do not cut the yarn. From now on just pull up the color needed.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc in next sc, dc in next 4 sc, *dc2tog, dc in next 4 sc; rep from around till last sc, slst to 1st dc. –60 dc

Note: Slst to 1st dc not to ch 2 st. See fig A below.

Change colors to CC.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, *dc2tog, dc in next 3 dc; rep from around till last dc, slst to 1st dc. –48 dc

Change colors to MC.

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, *dc2tog, dc in next 2 dc; rep from around till last dc, slst to 1st dc. –36 dc

Figure A: Slst to 1st dc not ch 2.

Change colors to CC.

Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in next 2 dc, *dc2tog, dc in next dc; rep from around till last dc, slst to 1st dc. –24 dc

Change colors to MC.

Rnd 6: Ch 2, dc in next dc, dc2tog around till last dc, slst to 1st dc. –12 dc

Change colors to CC. Cut MC leaving a tail to weave in.

Rnd 7: Ch 2, dc all together. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note: See special stitches for how to dc all together.

Brim

Note:

  1. Work the stitches tight so the brim maintains shape.
  2. Stitch count is not important. We may end the rnd at an increase or a sc. Does not matter.
  3. Brim rounds will start from 1 again.
  4. Work brim on RS.

Attach yarn in dc after ch- 2 sp on RS. Start with CC.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same dc, sc in next 11 st, sc2tog (in the next 2 ch- 2 sps), *sc in next 12 st, sc2tog (in the next 2 ch- 2 sps); rep from * around, slst to 1st sc.

Change colors to MC. Cut CC leaving a tail to weave in.

Work entire rnd 2 in front loop only. Rest of rnds worked normally. From now on, we may end rnds at increase or a sc. Does not matter what stitch we end rnds at.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc (working in front loop for this rnd) in same sc, sc in next 3 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, rep from * around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, sc in next 4 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; rep from * around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, sc in next 5 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc; rep from * around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, sc in next 6 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc; rep from * around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 10: Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc, sc in next 7 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc; rep from * around, slst to 1st sc.

Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Change colors to CC. Cut MC leaving a tail to weave in.

Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in each sc around, slst to 1st sc.

Fasten off and weave in all the ends.

Finishing

Fabric stiffener (optional) can be used to prevent the hat from being floppy. Make sure it is diluted before applying. Leave the hat to dry for enough time before using.

Ties:

Using MC AND CC together with 5.5 mm hook,

Ch 50 leaving long tail ends. Make one more tie. Attach the ties on opposite sides on the inside of the hat with the tail ends (see fig below).
